    Weekly Golf Report 15.05.12

    Saturday Competition

It could be argued that the summer hasn’t started yet. The weather was very reasonable for the early morning golfers last Saturday, the tee boxes were set back as far as they could be placed. The little bit of warm weather we experienced through the week had brought some growth to the fairways and greens on the course. Let me suggest that Edenmore golfer Alistair Simpson took full advantage of the better putting conditions on the course. He certainly would not have not have guessed that he was going to return the best overall nett gross winning score on the day after being seven over par after the first five holes. Twelve handicapper, Alistair played what he said was “one of the greatest rounds of golf he has played in the last twenty years”. The event was the Scratch Cup qualifying competition. Alistair he returned a magnificent winning score of 66. After his poor start Alistair went on to play the remaining 13 holes in level par including a birdie on the eleventh and his only dropped shot on the tricky par three fourteenth.

The gross prize was won by David Lyttle. David playing off 5 and not having had a chance to play much this season played a steady round, he returned a superb gross score of 77. David had one of the best starts of the day being level par after the first five holes, no mean feat for any player at Edenmore playing off the white markers. Things slipped a little with bogies on the next four holes however his three birdies and two pars on the back nine secured his valuable gross win in this prestigious club competition.

    Section Prizes

Section one (0-13) handicap section winners were as follows; – First was Stephen Hylands 69 beating Graham McIlroy into 2nd place on a better back nine.  Stephen had seven pars and two birdies during his round and only he knows just how much better his round could have been after being caught out on the difficult fourteenth.  Shane O’Hanlon took 3rd place on countback with a score of 70.
Section two (14-18) handicap was won by Sean McCabe with a nett score of 68. Sean had three pars on his front nine and a much better back nine with five pars on the way back in. He beat Robert Watson and Patrick O’Hagan into 2nd and 3rd places respectively on nett 69.
Section three (19-22) handicap winner was Mark Clendinning with a net score of 68 being followed in by John Graham 71 and Alan McGahie 72. Mark had a strong front nine with four pars and finishing with a nett 32 for the front nine which equalled the lowest nett score for the front nine holes.
Section four (23-28) handicap where all three winners returned a nett score of 69 with Mark Lawson coming out the winner from Desmond McCarthy from Philip Mulholland. Mark not only won his section but had some pretty spectacular scoring on the way. He managed to get the biggest handicap cut of the day losing three shots off his 25 handicap. All this because he had 5 pars and then a birdie on the Hunky Dory Challenge seventeenth hole. What was so special well he won his section with a nine and an eleven on his card well done for persevering and winning the section and the great handicap cut with more to follow for sure.

    Qualifiers

The top sixteen players qualify for the matchplay stage of this competition and the first sixteen players in order were; David Lyttle, Phil Sheldon, Alastair Simpson, Colin McKee, Patrick Agnew, Dave Finlayson, James Curran, Graham McIlroy, Shane O’Hanlon, Colin Whan, Stephen Cummings, John Boyles, Stuart Baird, Deaglan O’Hagan, Clyde Anderson and Jim Uprichard. All the players shot between a gross 77 and gross 82 to qualify.

    May Day Monday

Last Monday was the Mayday Monday competition. The weather could be described without exaggeration as being atrocious. Horizontal rain at times with winds rising to 40mph obviously suited Isaac Mulholland.  Isaac played steady golf, keeping the ball in play and won with a magnificent score of 39pts, beating Paul McKay on countback. Christian Kennedy had a worthwhile day off school finishing 3rd on 38pts. Given the conditions Brian Mercer played an excellent round winning the gross prize on the day. Brian shot a gross 80.

    Wednesday Stableford

Wednesday always has a large turnout of golfers for the weekly competition. This week was no exception where the overall winner was high handicapper Simon McKinstry with 45pts. Shane O’Hanlon took 2nd place on 43pts which was his fourth prize in just three weeks. Third place went to David Bingham on 42pts from Richard Greer on 41pts. A young man who has  been out of the limelight recently has come good at the start of this season. Patrick Agnew was rewarded for his hard work by winning the gross prize with a gross score of 75.

    Ladies section

In the Ladies May medal, 1st went to Edith Watson with a nett 71.  Second spot went to Stephanie Watson with her nett 74 and third place went to Elaine Thompson with a nett 78. There were two 2’s Gillian Murphy on the 14th and Heather Patterson on the 17th

    Interclub matches

    Minor Cup

The ladies had a first leg win against Enniskillen at home in the Minor Cup. The result of the match was 3/2 in Edenmore’s favour with the away leg to be played at the end of the month.

    Miele

The girls also played Ardglass on Sunday in the ILGU Miele Competition where two matches are played simultaneously on the home and away course. Our girls had four players at Ardglass and four players at home. The particularly difficult weather conditions on both courses made the match somewhat of an endurance test for the players especially the girls at Ardglass.  The two home matches were won early with good wins however with poor telephone reception in Ardglass the ladies stayed out on the course and were eventually rescued from the weather with one match up in Edenmore’s favour and the other down. Edenmore Ladies now progress to the next round.

    Cowdy

In the Cowdy Edenmore Ladies prised 11 points from a strong Armagh side in their away first leg match and have all to play for in the home match next week.

    Rossmore Cup

The Rossmore Cup team who were beaten semi finalists last year commenced their 2012 campaign with a home leg against Castleblaney Golf club.  Home advantage gave us the edge coming in with a 3-1 winning score.  New comer into the squad Alan Patterson paired up with the swanky South African Martin Delport and came in with a 4 and 2 victory.  Gerry McClory and Dennis McGreevy were also victorious winning 1up.  Another match going to the 18th were Tom Crooks and another rookie Stephen Andrews also winning 1up.  Unfortunately Jim Price and Richard Swain lost the last hole to lose their match by 1 hole.  This Sunday we travel to the spectacular Concra Wood for the return leg with the squad in a very good upbeat mood.

    Weekly Golf Report 09.05.12

    Saturday Competition

The weather around Edenmore golf club recently is very much in keeping with the dreadful weather we are all experiencing throughout N. Ireland.  Cold wet and windy are the miserable conditions such as that described, does not deter these hardy sportsmen from enjoying their chosen hobby. The two stars of last Saturday’s competition were David Finlayson and Paddy O’Hagan. The big hitting Dave, given the adverse conditions shot a superb round of 74 when winning the gross prize. Paddy, who was only introduced to the sport a few months ago is certainly making rapid progress with his handicap coming tumbling down almost on a weekly basis. His winning overall score of 43pts was three points clear of his nearest adversary.

    The Sections

Who around Edenmore doesn’t recognise the growing reputation of the terrible twins? Continuing their winning form from last week in the greensomes competition is Shane O’Hanlon and Paddy O’Hagan.  Paddy as reported earlier, has already stepped up on that doubles victory with his first individual success.  Shane O’Hanlon, the younger element of the duo won the (0-13) handicap section. The long and straight hitting Shane, week on week continues to improve and was the very ready winner of this tough section on 39pts. Runner up in this section was Gerry McClory 38pts beating Martin Delport on a better back nine.

Section two (14-18) handicap winner was Alan Boomer with 40pts followed home by Ian Little on 39pts and Graham Cantley on 38pts.

Section three (19-22) section winner was Sean McCabe with a mighty 40pts from Alan McGahie on 36pts. Connor McGinn took the bronze with 35pts.

Section four (22-28) handicap winner was Terry Coates with an excellent 40pts from Anderson Henderson on 37pts from Tom Ellison on 36pts.

    Wednesday Competition

Last Wednesday heralded another open day of golf at Edenmore Golf and Country Club. There were many golfers from different parts of the province participating in the very difficult conditions. Local man William Moffett was the victor on the day with 38pts with William McKinstry and Paul Bradley also on 38pts being narrowly beaten on count back. Stuart Gracey took 4th place also on count back from Mark Clendinning after both players returned a score of 36pts. The gross winner on the day was a very welcome visitor from Massereene. Stephen Hall shot a gross score of 79 for outright victory.

    Monday Competition

John Stanage is a name coming more and more into the prizes of the Monday seniors competition. John has lifted another winners voucher with a great round of 35pts with Stuart Cameron taking his 8th runners up spot. Ironically, Stuart was yet again beaten on count back. Stuart, all I can say is…. one of these days … one of these days.

Edenmore’s Ulster Four Ball Squad shows its class!

Last Sunday seen the beginning of Edenmore’s 2012 campaign to win the Ulster Four Ball Trophy. Playing at home and against a highly experienced team of golfers from Donegal, our guys went out and did the business! After the first 5 holes we were up in 4 of the 5 matches, and continued to increase our lead through nine, before most matches ended early with decisive victories for 4 of the 5 matches. No match went past the 15th hole. The standard of golf was excellent, and each and every one of our squad played some great golf, but the high standard was illustrated by Ian Little’s 155 yard approach shot into the 13th ending up no more that 4 ft from a difficult pin position!

While this first leg of the first round’s 4 and 1 result was a great victory, it will not be easy to take another 2 matches from the Donegal men at their home course, and we must again play our best if we are to get through to the next round.

The standard of golf in Ulster Four Ball is supposed to be at the higher end of the handicap range (no less than 17 during the previous year) and was once again superb, with pars not guaranteeing a win on any hole.

5 teams of two golfers take on their opponents in fourball format, and It’s not unusual for this highly competitive championship that the standards are exceptionally high. I won’t mention Kenny Logan’s name in case he gets embarrassed, but he was something like 2 over gross after 9 holes. You can see why we have to show handicap records at the start of each match.

All the team played superbly well, and this year’s starting team consisted of Kenneth Logan, Kenny Beeton, Harold Spence, Jim Allen, Bryn Lister, Bill Wilkinson, Jim Cullen, Jonathan McGaghy, Ian Little and Brian O’Hagan. The unsung man in the background is Tom Chapman, who has to produce handicap records for every player on the squad.

We’re very much looking forward to playing at Murvagh in Donegal this Saturday, and are determined to take at least two matches for the overall win.

I’ll keep you informed how we get along, but try to come along and watch some great golf and support your team.

Jim Fleming (Ulster Four Ball Team Captain)

Edenmore were delighted to host the wedding of Lynette Guiney & William McGrath on Saturday 28th April 2012.

The happy couple decided on one of the new All Inclusive Weddings as between work and study, free time was hard to come by.

Opting for the Classic package which includes cake, flowers, band and photographer, the couple had this to say about their special day:

“TracyAnn (OccasionsNI) – her flowers were unreal. She got them exactly how I wanted them. The bows on the chairs were fabulous and she was so happy to meet with us and discuss ideas.

Sonya (Toppings) -cakes were fab, we had cake for breakfast, lunch and tea on Sunday. They were moist and just lovely.

The wedding suite is lovely, very comfortable and clean.

The service at Edenmore was super professional! Loved the detail on mine and William’s dessert
plates. The room looked great with that number of people in it, and we really
liked how the chair settings let us see everyone’s faces.

Our day was fantastic. It couldn’t have been better, really!”

The staff at Edenmore would like to pass on congratulations and to Mr & Mrs McGrath and best wishes for the future!

    Saturday Competition

Saturday was the Les Jones Memorial Qualifying competition and took the form of a stableford pairs event.  Both players teed off and then the best drive was selected and play continued from there. The top sixteen pairs qualified and then go through to the matchplay stage of the event. They were 1st Shane O’Hanlon & Paddy O’Hagan with 44 points. Shane and Paddy shot some fantastic golf to win by three clear shots in this quite difficult format that doesn’t really let players get into the swing of their game. Sometimes you don’t get a putt for a few holes or get to play a shot into a green because you have the best drive. However well done lads.  Second spot went to Sean Magill & Jonathan McGahey with 41 points.  3rd Kenny Gracey & Daniel Downey with 41 points.  4th Alan Patterson & Harold Spence with 40 points.  5th Lyle Hamilton and David Allen with 40 points.  6th Glen McMillen & Bill White with 39 points.  7th David Erwin & Lee McClintock with 38 points.  8th Sam Quigley & Kenny Logan with 37 points.  9th Colin Whan & Jackie Gilliland with 37 points.  10th Paul Magill & Phillip Tinsley with 37 points.  11th Alistair Simpson & Aurthur Wenlock with 37 points.  12th Deaglan O’Hagan & Brian O’Hagan with 37 points.  13th Dominic Downey & Brian Robinson with 37 points.  14th Phillip Henderson & Andrew Henderson with 37 points.  15th James Scott & Tony Connolly with 37 points.  16th Bryn Swift & Andy Bennett with 36 points.

    Monday Seniors Competition

The Monday seniors had a runaway winner in Alistair Simpson who was five points clear on 40 pts. Bill Henderson was leader of the chasers on 35 pts. Gilbert Sinclair and Stuart Cameron took third and fourth with 34 and 33 pts respectively.

    Wednesday Competition

In the Wednesday Monthly Medal Lee McClintock was four strokes clear with an excellent nett 67 playing off his 20 handicap. Martin Delport came in second with a very tidy nett 71. Malcolm Powell was on par also with his nett 71 and taking third spot by virtue of a weaker back nine. Martin Wright was just a shot behind on a nett 72. Stuart Cameron and Alan Clinghan were a further shot behind on nett 73.

    Ladies Golf

The Tuesday Competition was won by Heather Patterson scoring 37 pts. Edith Watson was second with 33 pts and Elaine Thompson was third on 30 pts.

Saturdays eighteen hole stableford saw another good turnout and Heather Patterson win again this time with 33 pts from Vivenne Wigton in second on 31 pts and Mary Falls on 30 pts taking third place.

    Interclub Results

First round of Junior Foursomes v Enniskillen

This was the first time we have ever met Enniskillen in any of the Ladies Interclub Matches. We hosted the first leg last Sunday in the first round of the Junior Foursomes and Gillian Murphy and Caroline Watson were first out followed by Louise Gaw and Karen Legrand and anchored by Colleen Hanna and Sally Cushnahan. The middle pairing of Louise and Karen were dormie 4 on the 16th tee box and after a long drive and superb second shot onto the green followed by a great long drive and a gimme putt, the match closed out with a 5 and 3 win which cancelled the earlier defeat of Edenmore’s first pairing. As if 18 holes weren’t enough, the last pairing finally got a result on the 20th hole with a win resulting in the girls heading to Enniskillen with a 2-1 lead and a slim 1 hole advantage.

Second round of Junior Foursomes v Enniskillen

The return leg was played on Sunday in beautiful, albeit cold and windy, weather. Warm hospitality was extended by the Enniskillen girls and the matches were all played in good spirit. The first pairing of Colleen Hanna and Louise Gaw battled well, but unfortunately were beaten 5 and 4 by the local girls. The middle pairing of Gillian and Caroline were up for most of the matches and closed it out on the 17th hole with a 2 and win. Last out were Sally and Cherry who had a very tight match but came back from being 2 down to win their match 1up on the 18th hole and sealed Edenmore’s very close victory.

Second round of Minor Cup v Castlerock

Saturday 21st April saw the Castlerock Ladies visit Edenmore. The team set off in one of the heaviest showers of the afternoon, but thankfully it passed after a few holes to let the girls dry out a little. Karen was first out again and came through the first nine all square, she went on to win 5and 3. Next out was Sally who came through nine, 5 up. After letting the opposing Team Captain get a few holes back, Sally closed out her match with a 3 and 2 victory on the 16th hole. Heather was third out and came through nine 2 up and managed to close out her match on the 16th, 3 and 2 also. Unfortunately, the last match out had also finished on the 14th hole but in Castlerock’s favour. The last match still out featured Diane Hunter whose match had been very tight the whole way through. Diane went one up on the 16th and halved the 17th. Unfortunately she lost the 18th forcing the match up the nineteenth hole. It came down to the last putt, but Diane held her nerve and won by 1 up. So Edenmore head to the seaside next week for the return leg having won 4 matches and 7 holes up.

    Weekly Golf Report 24.04.12

    Saturday Competition

This just seemed like a normal Saturday for the golfers at Edenmore.  A cold northerly wind throughout the day brought forth a continuous deluge of April showers. Yes indeed the scoring was tough, but there are always a few people who thrive in these conditions.  It was the first stroke competition of the new season at Edenmore. In stroke play every dropped shot, can so easily be followed by another faux pas on the same hole destroying a player’s confidence so easily.  Not so for 15 handicapper Aurthur Wenlock. Aurthur plotted his way round the course to finish as outright winner with a magnificent net score of 65, two strokes ahead of his nearest rival. Someone who has not been in the winner’s circle for a while is James Curran however James was back in form and playing off his 5 handicap, shot a superb 3 over gross winning score of 74 for victory.

    The Sections

The section winners were as follows;-
In section one (0-13) handicap the winner was the young rising star Shane O’Hanlon with a net 68 from Gerry McClory on 72 beating Martin Delport into 3rd place on count back.
Section two (14-18) handicap was won by Brian Rice coming out as victor with a net 67. Runner up was Alan Lowry on 68 again winning on countback from Basil Irwin also on a net 68.
Section three (19-22) handicap winner was Sean McCabe with a very useful net 67. Sean was followed home by Stephen Murphy on a net 70 with third spot going to Richard McCall with a net 71.
Section four (23-28) handicap where Simon McKinstry came into the winners enclosure with a net 67 four shots clear of Richard Greer (71) and Martin Steele also on 71.

    Wednesday Competition

The Wednesday stableford had not as many golfers on the tee as would normally be there and it was obviously the adverse weather conditions had a lot to do with that. South African born Martin Delport is a man very proud of his roots and determination. Martin battled his way round in what he described as Arctic conditions finishing with a winning score of 39pts beating the ultra consistent Alan Patterson on countback. Third place was taken by Richard Greer on 38pts. Apparently, you can’t keep a good man down or at least that is what young Shane O’Hanlon said after shooting 82 when winning the best gross on the day.

    Monday seniors

Trevor Campbell would not be a name you would read about on a regular basis. The competition was the Monday seniors and Trevor certainly did, on this occasion put his head well above the parapet. His winning score of 45pts was five points clear of closest rival Patrick Magee on 40 pts beating Stephen O’Reilly on countback for the runners spot. The best gross on the day was won by Billy Moffett with a score of 83shots.

    Weekly Golf Report 17.04.12

    Saturday Competition

The topsy turvy weather of the last week has left the golfing fraternity of Edenmore in a right muddle. Is it a day for shorts and tee shirt or a day for the wet tops and winter woolies? This was well reflected in the scoring of the early morning golfers last Saturday. For the first time in my Edenmore golfing memory, shortly after eleven o’clock the air horn had to be blown for the suspension of play due to an exceptionally severe hail storm which literally covered the greens in less than one minute. Play was resumed some minutes later.

Despite these horrible conditions, Davy Finlayson, one of the better golfers in the club, playing off a three handicap had to endure the foulest of weather after teeing off about 8.45am shot a magnificent winning gross score of 73. Big Dave had double bogies on his first two holes and soon regained form with two pars followed by two birdies. His pars on the next three holes had him off the front nine in level par. Despite another birdie on the thirteenth he finished two over for the back nine. Dave had a bogie free round last season and is building form for another great round soon. The best overall score of the day was won by Michael Crowe with a superb stableford score of 44pts. Michael played off 21 managed to score a very nice birdie on the fourteenth and topped it up with five nice pars. His big secret was no dings on his card which kept the points rolling in. His success got him a nice three shot cut to his handicap.

    The Sections

    The handicap section winning scores on the day were as follows-;

Section one (0-13) handicap winner was Colin McKee 34pts on count back from Graham McIlroy also on 34pts with Paul Murray coming 3rd also beaten on count back with 34pts. Colin won the section on count back and his round certainly was a round of two nines. His front nine had 13 pts on the card at the turn but three birdies and three pars on the back made his 21 pts on the back nine a winning score.

Section two, (14-18) handicap winner was Alan Weir with a brilliant 38pts. Alan playing off 17 got off to a poor start but soon recovered form to score of 18n pts on the front nine and an even better 20 pts on the back nine. Alan was two pts clear of Keith Robinson and Peter Whiteside both returning 36pts with the former winning on count back.

Section three (19-22) handicap was won by the wily old campaigner Bob Scott playing off 22. Bob shot a great round, and returned 42pts for victory with a very tidy back nine of 22 pts. Because of the difficulty of the competition on Saturday Bob lost three shots for his win. Lee McClintock is well on his game at the minute when he shot 37 points for the runner up spot and followed in by Isaac Mulholland with 36pts.

Section four (23-28) handicap was won by David Jones on 37pts. David also had a much better back nine scoring 21 pts on the way home after 16 on the way out. Phillip Grattan took second on 36pts with 3rd place going to David Waterworth on 35pts.

    The Wednesday Stableford

The Wednesday stableford was played off the yellow markers, and as always was very closely contested. The man of the minute has done it again. Ian Hutchinson has been in the winning enclosure five times in as many weeks scored a superb 44pts for victory. Ian has now lost believe it or not eight shots off his handicap in just over two weeks from the start of the new season. He beat a very unlucky David Bingham (on count back) who also returned 44pts. Sam McConnell was 3rd on 41pts from Martin Delport 4th on 40pts. Shane O’Hanlon finished 5th with 39pts. And finally a name that’s creeping into the winners frame more and more recently is Davy Erwin. This week was no exception when he won the gross prize after shooting a gross 73.

    Monday Seniors Competition

Easter Monday was a beautiful day, thus ensuring a great turn-out of golfers at the club. There have been rounds of golf and there have been rounds of golf, but very few equalling the winning score of 15 handicapper Neill Usher. The conditions were tough enough, with the greens getting slicker and the pins tucked away. Neill didn’t acknowledge any of this as went on to shoot an amazing 49pts. The highlights of his game were an early birdie on the second hole followed by pars on nine of the next ten holes. His eagle on the thirteenth was something else and just made it the round of his life. He had two more pars on the way home for one of his best ever rounds at Edenmore. Well done young man! Simon George shot, what would normally be a winning score of 43pts but on this occasion had to settle for the runners’ up spot. Simon had a lovely run of five pars from the seventh and also had one of his best rounds.  Neil McMullan also had a great day finishing 3rd with 42pts. Young Davy Erwin has done it again. His gross score of 73 was well clear of all opposition.

    Ladies Section

In the ladies section Tuesday’s winner was Debbie McMaster scoring 33 points, 2nd spot went to Heather Patterson scoring 30 points and winning on count back from 3rd place Stephanie Watson also on 30 points

In Saturdays 18 hole Stableford Debbie McMaster was still in form to win with 36 points. Heather Patterson took second with 27 points on count back this time from Claire Ussher also on27 points

    Weekly Golf Report 10.04.12

    Saturday Competition

The golfers at Edenmore are now supposedly welcoming the warmer days as summer time approaches. It certainly was not evident last Saturday, as the temperatures barely rose above 10 degrees with a cold wind chill factor coming in from the north making it feel even colder. The quality of golf, as always remained at an exceptionally high level which was exemplified by Philip Sheldon winning the gross competition. Phillip, playing off a scratch handicap shot an excellent two over par 73.His score probably doesn’t represent his card very well Philip had four birdies on his card. He finished the front nine with back to back birdies on eight and nine and then had two more on the difficult twelfth and fifteenth on the back nine. Sadly he had six bogies during his round three of them on par threes. I feel certain with the sheer number of birdies Phil scores there is a truly excellent round just around the corner.

The overall winner on the day was Alex Davis with a magnificent 43pts. Alex plays off sixteen and managed to score seven pars and a nice birdie on the par five fifteenth hole on his way to claiming victory.

    The Sections

In section one (0-13) handicap winner was Linton Kennedy with 38pts beating his son Christian into 2nd place on count back. Linton’s back nine was certainly a lot stronger than his front nine with a nice run starting on the twelfth with a birdie and then two pars before another birdie on the fifteenth which certainly gave him the edge over Christian. Third place went to Stephen Cummings also 38pts again on count back.

The Section two (14-18) handicap section winner was David Allen a point clear with 40pts from William Grant on 39pts. David didn’t get off to the best of starts with two double bogies on one and two however he quickly got things under control with two pars on three and four. After a bogie on five he was straight back on form with a run of five straight pars from the sixth playing of his 15 handicap. He slipped in a further three pars for good measure before finishing with an excellent 40 pts. David Belshaw took third place on count back also returning 39pts.

In section three (19-22) handicap the winner was Jonathan McGahey who really played well and this was reflected in his winning score of 42pts. Jonathan started his round with a par and finished with a par a pretty good achievement and one many members at Edenmore would give their right arm for. A further five pars in the mix and no dings secured his second overall score of 42 pts, Well Done for getting a two shot chop to 17 so early in the season. Runner up was John Hart who beat Stephen Murphy on count back when both players returned 39pts. Stephen had the equal best front nine of the day with an amazing 24 points but sadly his back fifteen was beaten on count back by John.

In section four (23-28) handicap the winner was Kevin Kelly scoring an excellent 39pts beating Herbie Boomer into second on 38pts with Phillip Grattan 3rd on 37pts. Kevin playing off 28 didn’t get off to the best start but his two pars and then a birdie on the thirteenth secured his win.

    Wednesday Competition
The Wednesday (OPEN) competition was as always very closely contested. Playing off the white markers and the pin positions well tucked away on the greens, the scoring was always going to be tough. The weather was cold with a 20mph wind blowing on the day, making the conditions for play even more difficult.
Two of the leading contenders in this competition were opposing each other in a nice friendly fourball. Philip Sheldon and Clyde Anderson went head to head, and of course there can only be one winner. Philip who has been winning on a very regular basis recently, put another notch on his putter. Friendly, I think not. This was epitomised when Philip hit his 2nd shot (7 iron) from the rough on the par 4 sixth hole. It landed just two feet from the flag and trickled into the hole for an eagle two. He went on to birdie both par 5s on the back 9 to be the outright winner on the day. Clyde, despite playing well, and tucking away a birdie of his own, had to settle for the gross prize with a gross 83. Runner up on the day was Conor Gribbon with 36pts beating 3rd placed Paul O’Hanlon on count back.

     Monday Seniors Competition
The Monday senior’s competition is always close and this week was no different. Playing off the yellow markers Walter Ferris set about his golf with tremendous gusto. His winning score on the day of 42pts is undoubtedly a true reflection of how he has recently been playing. Walter was followed over the line by John Stanage just one point behind on 41pts.

    Ladies Section

Last Tuesday the competition was won by Diane Hunter scoring 37 pts, close on her heels was Heather Patterson with 36 pts. Third place went to Karen Legrand scoring 29 pts The Saturday Competition saw Heather Patterson coming second again with 35 points this time behind a fantastic 43 points scored by Karen Legrand. Karen’s round started quite unremarkably with a double bogey at the first followed by two bogies. Her first par came at the fourth followed by another at the eighth. Karen continued on the second nine quite steady but came to life round Edenmore’s own “Amen corner”. After a good drive on the twelfth, Karen’s second shot found the centre of the hole resulting in a two and a welcome further 5 points! Karen followed this up with a further two pars over the 13th and 14th and finished off the round scoring at every hole and receiving a cut of two shots for her efforts.

  • Watson’s Creativity Long Time Coming

    Posted on by edenmore

Somewhere down in tiny Bagdad, Fla., there must be a patch of woods from where little Bubba Watson used to extricate an errant plastic golf ball with the developing wide-arcing swing and flick of his wrists. A 12-year-old with the given name of Gerry Jr. but the nickname Bubba would aim shots around his boyhood home and manipulate the ball past the live oaks that adorn the far western Florida Panhandle burg.

”If you know about wiffle balls or plastic balls, it’s hard to cut the ball,” Watson said years ago. “Then I learned to hook it the other way, hit it high over limbs, hit it low under limbs. I’d say non-stop every day from 6 to 12 years old. Instead of playing with trucks out in the yard, I’d play with a ball and a club.”

Bagdad and Augusta are worlds apart but Bubba Watson learned his childhood lesson well as millions watched while dusk approached on Sunday at the 76th Masters Tournament. After a hooked drive into the woods on the second playoff hole, the par-4 No. 10 at Augusta National, the left-handed Watson remained positive.

“If I have a swing, I’ve got a shot,” Watson said on Sunday evening. “So I’m used to the woods.  I’m used to the rough. ”

Watson’s approximate 150-yard shot from the woods drew on his youthful play. He used a gap wedge to hook the ball right nearly 40 yards, over the fairway bunker, around a TV tower and the viewing patrons to within 10 feet of the hole. After playoff foe Louis Oosthuizen failed to get up and down from the front of the green, Watson two-putted for par to win the Masters and established another in a long line of great shots to win the Green Jacket.

“I’ve never had a dream go this far,” Watson said, “so I can’t really say it’s a dream come true.”

Watson’s story entering the Masters was of the fairy tale variety for the 33-year old University of Georgia graduate. His wife, Angie, is a 6-foot-4 former college basketball player at Georgia who also played professionally. During Masters week, she was busy at their temporary rental home in Orlando, Fla. with the couples’ recently adopted newborn son Caleb. Just two weeks before the Masters and during the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, the Watsons rode life’s rollercoaster – a Monday adoption opportunity had been denied, Tuesday news that another had been accepted and then the Wednesday decision to finalize the adoption process. Five days later, on Monday, March 26, the Watsons went to South Florida to pick up Caleb.

As Watson came to Augusta National to prepare for the Masters less than a week later, thoughts of his new son were prevalent but also soothing. His creativity also played out perfectly.

Watson sports a pink driver head and shaft to support cancer research, in honor of his late father, Gerry, who died of cancer in October 2010. His clothier supplied his all-white outfit last week in hopes of raising funds for surgery for children with physical defects. Off the course, Watson may be the most digitally inclined Masters champion, participating in the new Masters Collector’s Edition EA Sports video game, co-starring in humorous musical videos with other PGA Tour players Ben Crane, Rickie Fowler and Hunter Mahan and as an extremely active social networker. He even purchased the “General Lee” Dodge Charger made famous in the 1980s TV show, “The Dukes of Hazzard.”

Likewise, he rarely takes the straight path on the course, instead choosing to go full speed and shape shots in both directions, sometimes as much as 60 yards while working the ball toward the hole location. He has never had a lesson or watched his swing analysis on video, truly a rarity among today’s pros. Laying up is an insult – as he emulates Seve Ballesteros and Phil Mickelson – and hitting short irons into par 5s at Augusta National offers a distinct advantage. One prominent instructor recently said Watson has the best hands in golf he has ever seen.

“I attack. I always attack,” Watson said. “I don’t like to go to the center of the greens. I want to hit the incredible shot; who doesn’t?  That’s why we play the game of golf, to pull off the amazing shot.”

You can consider that achievement completed.
