Saturday Competition

The golfers at Edenmore are now supposedly welcoming the warmer days as summer time approaches. It certainly was not evident last Saturday, as the temperatures barely rose above 10 degrees with a cold wind chill factor coming in from the north making it feel even colder. The quality of golf, as always remained at an exceptionally high level which was exemplified by Philip Sheldon winning the gross competition. Phillip, playing off a scratch handicap shot an excellent two over par 73.His score probably doesn’t represent his card very well Philip had four birdies on his card. He finished the front nine with back to back birdies on eight and nine and then had two more on the difficult twelfth and fifteenth on the back nine. Sadly he had six bogies during his round three of them on par threes. I feel certain with the sheer number of birdies Phil scores there is a truly excellent round just around the corner.

The overall winner on the day was Alex Davis with a magnificent 43pts. Alex plays off sixteen and managed to score seven pars and a nice birdie on the par five fifteenth hole on his way to claiming victory.

The Sections

In section one (0-13) handicap winner was Linton Kennedy with 38pts beating his son Christian into 2nd place on count back. Linton’s back nine was certainly a lot stronger than his front nine with a nice run starting on the twelfth with a birdie and then two pars before another birdie on the fifteenth which certainly gave him the edge over Christian. Third place went to Stephen Cummings also 38pts again on count back.

The Section two (14-18) handicap section winner was David Allen a point clear with 40pts from William Grant on 39pts. David didn’t get off to the best of starts with two double bogies on one and two however he quickly got things under control with two pars on three and four. After a bogie on five he was straight back on form with a run of five straight pars from the sixth playing of his 15 handicap. He slipped in a further three pars for good measure before finishing with an excellent 40 pts. David Belshaw took third place on count back also returning 39pts.

In section three (19-22) handicap the winner was Jonathan McGahey who really played well and this was reflected in his winning score of 42pts. Jonathan started his round with a par and finished with a par a pretty good achievement and one many members at Edenmore would give their right arm for. A further five pars in the mix and no dings secured his second overall score of 42 pts, Well Done for getting a two shot chop to 17 so early in the season. Runner up was John Hart who beat Stephen Murphy on count back when both players returned 39pts. Stephen had the equal best front nine of the day with an amazing 24 points but sadly his back fifteen was beaten on count back by John.

In section four (23-28) handicap the winner was Kevin Kelly scoring an excellent 39pts beating Herbie Boomer into second on 38pts with Phillip Grattan 3rd on 37pts. Kevin playing off 28 didn’t get off to the best start but his two pars and then a birdie on the thirteenth secured his win.

Wednesday Competition
The Wednesday (OPEN) competition was as always very closely contested. Playing off the white markers and the pin positions well tucked away on the greens, the scoring was always going to be tough. The weather was cold with a 20mph wind blowing on the day, making the conditions for play even more difficult.
Two of the leading contenders in this competition were opposing each other in a nice friendly fourball. Philip Sheldon and Clyde Anderson went head to head, and of course there can only be one winner. Philip who has been winning on a very regular basis recently, put another notch on his putter. Friendly, I think not. This was epitomised when Philip hit his 2nd shot (7 iron) from the rough on the par 4 sixth hole. It landed just two feet from the flag and trickled into the hole for an eagle two. He went on to birdie both par 5s on the back 9 to be the outright winner on the day. Clyde, despite playing well, and tucking away a birdie of his own, had to settle for the gross prize with a gross 83. Runner up on the day was Conor Gribbon with 36pts beating 3rd placed Paul O’Hanlon on count back.

 Monday Seniors Competition
The Monday senior’s competition is always close and this week was no different. Playing off the yellow markers Walter Ferris set about his golf with tremendous gusto. His winning score on the day of 42pts is undoubtedly a true reflection of how he has recently been playing. Walter was followed over the line by John Stanage just one point behind on 41pts.

Ladies Section

Last Tuesday the competition was won by Diane Hunter scoring 37 pts, close on her heels was Heather Patterson with 36 pts. Third place went to Karen Legrand scoring 29 pts The Saturday Competition saw Heather Patterson coming second again with 35 points this time behind a fantastic 43 points scored by Karen Legrand. Karen’s round started quite unremarkably with a double bogey at the first followed by two bogies. Her first par came at the fourth followed by another at the eighth. Karen continued on the second nine quite steady but came to life round Edenmore’s own “Amen corner”. After a good drive on the twelfth, Karen’s second shot found the centre of the hole resulting in a two and a welcome further 5 points! Karen followed this up with a further two pars over the 13th and 14th and finished off the round scoring at every hole and receiving a cut of two shots for her efforts.
